If you are going to run one hooked up to a Mac be sure to Max out the RAM on the printer. Also note that it will only print one side not both on using a Mac. A important thing to note is that their is no CUPS support for it, and getting it to work in X11 is a problem. But considering that if you really look around you can get one for $50.00 plus shipping it's hard to beat.
As for the some what grey problem, the printer may have been set to save ink mode. I've noticed no such problem and it prints graphics well.
