I gave up trying to fix this last August, and saved everything she wanted to
keep and reinstalled the OS. I still have the old System Folder (I didn't do
a clean install). Unfortunately, the freezed problem persists.


Yeah, I'd be inclined to say it's an extension problem ... something to do with stuffit I shouldn't wonder ...

You might try this: download the latest version of Stuffit Expander that will run on your machine. This will put a fresh "Stuffit Engine" extension in your System Folder.

Now go into the extensions manager and select the most basic pre-fab setup they've got. See if the problem repeats.
