Subject: Enabling Java in OS 9
Should I try a different browser, if so which one?

The Java used in 9.x may have gone obsolete. I've been hearing stories similar to yours from people still in 9 trying to use Java. The solution, of course, is to update to OS X.

You might try downloading whichever iCab or Netscape works with your machine and give it a whirl, though.

Chas is probably on to something there. According to this site http://developer.apple.com/java/classic.html the last version of Mac Runtime for Java (MRJ) was 2.2.5 which implemented Java 1.1.8 for the Classic Mac OS. The current version of Java is 1.4.2.
