I'm getting error 5555 when I try to download from iTunes. I wasn't able to log into dotmac most of last week. There are no matching results on Apple's site. Google brings up others wondering what it means, but no one offering answers. Does anyone know what that is?
I can only tell you that I'm not having any trouble downloading from iTunes or logging into my .Mac pages either directly or from other computers.
I have no idea what error 5555 means, but I will say that random internet flakiness of the sort you're describing can often be traced to a change in firewall setup. Have you recently bought a router, or turned on the built-in OS X firewall by chance?

Today iTunes worked just fine. I was able to download a song, without a hitch. I did not do anything to fix it. It just worked (after trying probably three times over a course of ten days).
Regarding firewalls, I am discovering that mine is off. My sons (PCs) and I (Macs) are all connected by router to a DSL modem & line. My iMac is connected via ethernet cable, and my PowerBook is connected wirelessly. I know what firewalls do in a general sense; I just don't know anything about managing them. I'm looking at Sys Pref > Sharing > Firewall, and I don't know what I should select and deselect specifically.
