One review in a PC mag stated that it was so slow it felt like it was
emulating a machine 100 times slower and it was probably better to pick up
an old iMac or Powermac G3.
I used it [PearPC] for a while and I think it's not that bad. Actually the speed is pretty impressive for the task deemed by many impossible to achieve. It's still version 0.3.1 and many bugs have to be ironed out, and many features added, but so far the work progresses nicely, even though some momentum seem to have been lost (but that might be explained by the fact that one of the developers had an unfortunate fatal accident).
Cherry OS is last week's news (literally) and no one yet knows if it's for real or not. The website was up for a couple of days (with just generic info), but then went offline. The author promises a preview version soon while the majority of public opinion is that it's either a scam to promote developer's other activities, or an unauthorized copy of PearPC. I guess time will tell. Wired's Cult of Mac blog has some more information on that.
There are also other emulators: very good Basilisk for non-PPC Macintoshes, and (I think) Emaculator for Mac OS 9. Not sure about the last one, though.
