Lately, I've been using NeoOffice/J 0.8.4 to open Word docs that people insist on sending me. It's worked better than TextEdit with documents that have tables and graphics in them. Not quite aquified yet, but it's free.

The word docs we can't open at this point, were all saved with Word 2003 on a laptop running XP. Other docs saved the same way open fine. The diff seems to be that the difficult ones contain extra formatting and tables.
