The Activity Monitor is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. It will give you information on how much CPU time and memory is in use, as well as disk usage and a list of everything running on the system.
This may be a red herring, as the general opinion seems to be that hard drive space is the problem, but useful to know about anyway.
