I meant the Pioneer 107-DVR, not Panasonic 107-DVR. I could
buy an external SuperDrive but if the Sony does fail, I
don't think I'd have any way to boot from CD (in case of
problems).

Has anyone here experienced problems with their SuperDrive
when trying to
play DVDs or CDs? I have been having an intermittent issue
where my computer
will try to read the DVD or CD and then make a 'kerchunk'
sound. It chunks
and chunks while trying to read the DVD. I had this happen
while watching a
DVD movie and also while just trying to play a music CD in
iTunes.
I have not experienced problems while trying to write to
DVDs or CDs. There
are many discussions about this on Apple's iMac Discussion
Boards. I've

I'm wondering if this is a hardware or software issue. Many
of the postings
have recommended replacing the Sony SuperDrive with a
Panasonic 107-DVR
model. I'm having a hard time locating that particular drive
online (other
than ebay). It seems to be out-of-stock. I'm wondering if I
could use the
next in the series Panasonic 108-DVR.
I have a friend that repairs electronics on the side so he
will help me
replace the drive. I found instructions here -

My computer was purchased in May or June 2003. These
problems did not start
until shortly after my warranty expired and I chose not to
purchase the
AppleCare.
Looking back, I should have spent the $169 to renew it but
I've never had
problems with my previous systems. It didn't seem necessary.
