I've had very good luck with the nice cheap LiteOn CDRW drives. They seem 
to be recognized by OS X without any changes. You can get them from Other 
World Computing (www.macsales.com) for as low as $29 (this is for the OEM 
version, which best of what I can tell differs from the $35 retail 
version only in that it is missing the box).

I have one of them in a firewire case (bought as a unit from Other World 
Computing), but I also have a number of the drives in other machines as 
they have proven to be very reliable fast drives (52x24x52).
