What can be done? Can OSX users make their own boot system or if you
crash you have to lose it all? I realize there can be back ups, but
still...

The easiest solution (by far!) is to have a bootable clone drive ready to go.

Failing that, YES you can make your own Boot CDs and/or Restore CDs. Handy if, like many of us, your machine came with 10.3 and we're already up to 10.3.5 and don't want to bother with the combo updater.

To create a Boot CD, you will need a program called (ta da!) BootCD. You can find it on versiontracker.com or macupdate.com or pure-mac.com. It allows you to create a bootable CD and even to add utility tools (like Disk Warrior et al) on to it! Boots up slow as molasses in winter, but it works!

Carbon Copy Cloner (also available from the afore-mentioned sources) can create bootable clones of hard drives onto other hard drives, and can also create Restore images that can be burned to CD. http://www.bombich.com has a lengthy step-by-step on how to do this.
