Correct, the 8500 is gone now, stayed with the shop.... I may have to
go the  switch thingie, the information is important, unless I can find
someone to transfer it for me.

You just need the temporary use of any old Mac with SCSI and either a
burner, or ethernet and a way to cable that Mac to the iMac (crossover,
hub, etc.). If the drive was formatted HFS+ (instead of HFS) the old Mac
would have to be running System 8.1 or later. Where are you located?

Hmm.... now that's interesting, the drive was running in system 9 but I had it running before on a non power mac...... I wonder would that work on , say an LCIII or something of that genre or do they even have that ethernet connection thing?? I could stick a bigger hard drive in an old mac to transfer to??????
