Thanks for all the good ideas. I forgot to mention that previous owner 
had already installed 10.3.5, which is running fine. My main concern is 
whether I can just swap in the drive from my G4 as is, or would the 
iMac somehow "know" that OS X on that drive was *not* installed on the 
first 8gigs, and create some issue.

And yes, my Panther discs are regular retail install discs.

Be sure to do the iMac firmware update for the 400 MHz before 
attempting to install OSX.  It's a simple, and free thing but with 
10.2 and up, not upgrading the firmware can leave you trapped in the 
"Where the H#*LL did my computer go" mode.
If your copy of OSX was bought seperately in a shop
then I think you will be ok, unless it optimises
itself somehow for the machine its installed on.
Good advice. If you do not have the machine specific OS discs, you 
want the retail version.
