Has anyone had any luck cleaning a slot load CD/DVD drive from an iMac?

The one from my iMac DV SE has been sticking for a long time. When it
tries to eject, it won't push the CD out all the way and you have to grab
the edge of the disc and pull it out. It has not gotten bad enough that
it doesn't eject at all and I have to use tweezers to grab the disc (not
very good for the disc).

Has anyone had luck cleaning them or deglazing the rubber rollers that
push the CD out? I figured I'd ask before I dismantle the iMac and give
it a try. Just in case a number of people have tried and failed, and the
prospects don't look good.

In the event that it isn't cleanable, can an external DVD drive be used
to play DVDs? I'm thinking that if I can't repair it and have to replace
it, I may buy an external firewire DVD+-RW drive from OWC. I think I'd
rather spend the extra few bucks to get one of them then get a
replacement used internal drive of unknown condition. But I want to be
sure I can still play DVDs if I'm going to go that route.
