Thanks for the information. Thanks to everyone on the list who replied. I've found that the threads on this list turn into very interesting and educational discussions, I'm learning a lot. I do intend, eventually, to install OSX on my iMac. After installing a roomier internal HD, I will start to save and look for some more RAM. Then, I will buy Panther. Hopefully. Depends. May very well be Tiger if it will run on it, or maybe some other future cat. It's a work in progress.

You get a HD & format it for your computer & you can install any operating system that will run on your computer. The Hard drive doesn't care.
True, but on the Rev. A-D iMacs (like Freds, and mine), OS X must exist in a partiton that is fully contained within the first 8GB of the hard disc. In other words, when you install OS X, you must partition the HDD, to have (in this case a 7.5GB first partition (into which you install OS X) and a 113.5 GB second partition for everything else (Music, Data, Applications)) I have such a partition scheme in operation at home, and it works very well.
You can find info on changing where your /home folder is located on www.macosxhints.com
among others (hint: you use NetInfo Manager)
