Make sure you are getting a steady link. The link light should be a solid
color on the card. When in use, the activity light should be blinking
(possibly VERY fast).

If you hav a collision light (sometimes doubled with the Link light,
sometimes not present at all), see if it is blinking.

If you are getting a connection, but it is really very slow, it sounds
like you have a bad connection, This could be caused by a number of
different things. The first thing I would try is connect the Performa to
the cable modem and see if you get similar download/upload speeds as the
iMac. If so, then the error is in connecting the Performa and iMac. If
you are still very slow, then the error is in the Performa.

The next thing to check is make sure your crossover cable is a decent
one. Does it have all 8 wires? Is it wired properly? The iMac can do 100
Mbs speed, so the two devices may be trying to connect at that speed, but
100 Mbs is much more sensitive to bad cables or incorrect wiring. If you
can, tell one or both ends to work only at 10 Mbs and see if the problem
stops.

Also, you can get a cheap 10/100 cable/dsl router these days ($10-$20 on
sale). If you have two network capable computers, get one, and then
connect both and the cable modem all together and you can use both online
at the same time (and get the added protection of basic firewall
services... something you should have anyway). The downside to this,
AppleTalk is unlikely to work between the two Macs unless they both
support AppleTalk over IP (OS 9 or later). The cheap routers won't pass
AppleTalk on their hub ports (don't bother looking for a "better" grade
of router that will... you have to get into much more expensive equipment
before AppleTalk is supported... if you want/need it, just get a $10
hub/switch in addition to the router, connect the Macs to that, and it to
the router, and the router to the cable modem... then all will work fine).

Of course, none of that will neccessarily fix your speed problem with the
performa, but it also might, if the failure is getting the iMac and
Performa to link properly.
