Actually, I think it's fair to say that "most folks" don't put the computer a) in their bedroom and b) in the line of sight of their bed!
Cheap simple and leaves the LCD display as manufactured if you want to sell it later.
I would certainly discourage the OP from attempting to disassemble the iMac to that extent. It absolutely violates the warranty, there's a huge risk of damaging the machine/screen, and disabling the light will mean that someday you are going to have to do the whole operation again to RESTORE the light before you sell the machine (I would NEVER buy a machine that didn't have the glow light, because I would assume it was symptomatic of other problems!). A piece of white duct tape (yes it comes in colours now, and yes it still fixes everything under the sun) should do the trick.
