I have a lovely 400mhz slot-loader that has been running 10.3.4 flawlessly. The hard drive is a nearly-new 120. I leave it on almost 24/7. Woke up this AM to see something I had never seen in X: completely frozen screen. No cursor, and clock stopped at about 2AM. Here's what I have tried:
1. Reset button. Hear chimes, get folder icon with flashing question mark.
2.Inserting DiskWarrior CD in and rebooting while holding "C", but all I get is a grey screen.
My next idea is to eject the DiskWarrior CD so I can try booting from my X install disc, but the eject key has no effect. I recall that in 9 you could click and hold the mouse on startup, and that would eject the CD. I tried that, but it's not working. Am I doing it incorrectly, or does it not work in X? Any ideas welcome....
There is a problem with the power management in (at least some) iMacs. The harddisk goes to sleep and never wakes up. This causes the freeze. Reset doesn't clear it. You need to pull the power cord out, wait 10 seconds then plug it in again and re-boot.
