iMac 350 slot loading given to me. 9.0.4, 6GB, 192MB with the

to light up (waiting for desktop to load, sleeping iMac, waking up-
screen appears) so I could hurry up and update to 9.1 and apply the
4.1.3 firmware patch to (hopefully) fix the video problem. I was

install a bad System,[..]

Let's start by confirming that your video problem is firmware-related. The classic problem is a result of installing OS X on a machine with the older firmware. Was OS X installed on this iMac at one time? Is it still on?

Also, I'm not clear on the current state of the machine.
It came to you with 9.0.4. (And OS X?)
Did you update the firmware or not?
Did you update to OS 9.1 or not?
What do you see on the screen after you powerup?

I've got an iMac 350 slot loading, and I recall reading that there was an
internal (unapproved) way of adding an external VGA monitor (don't recall
how). This helps if OS X has been applied before the firmware update or if
the flyback transformer or PAV board causes a dark screen. Don't recall
offhand how to connect the monitor, however.

Sorry, I had all three replies open and was responding to the wrong ones. In answer, the screen is fine and bright when I have seen it load (the first 2 times time I booted, before I knew of this problem- the iMac was off for over 2 weeks and apparently this helps it "reset" itself) and it has in various stages presented all the classic firmware symptoms, "S1" thru "S4"
(from http://www.capecodgraphics.com/imac_firmware.htm), so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will resolve the issue if and when I'm ever able to get the chance to reboot and not squander it in haste.

As a first attempt, have you tried disconnecting the Hard drive and rebooting from a CD?

No. I'll try that after my next 24 hr. discharge period and report what happens.
