Check the switch / hub at the other end of the cable and make sure you are seeing a link light.

If so then try using a cable connected to a known working computer (moving the iMac if needed.)
Er, I have worked as a service engineer for 7 years, studied electronics for 4, so you'd think I'd know some elementry faultfinding techniques, eh ?!?

I didn't swap cable and come to think of it, the cable came out of my cupboard, un-tested, WITH A PIECE OF TAPE ON IT!!!

This will tell you if it's the cable or the computer.
99.99999% sure it's was the cable.
I'll go back there with a new cable!! :o)
