Be sure to check both front headphone jacks and the side sound jack. They 
tend to fail, and often fail in such a way that the Mac thinks something 
is plugged in and thus sound should only go to the jack. In some cases I 
have loosened it up by inserting and removing headphones repeatedly, 
eventually getting the main sound working again.
