Have an APC 400 in the power line.
As the iBookis a bttery dependent machine, I work the battery,
allowing it to discharge regularly, flat, then plugging it in
to recharge.

As to power problems, the local electricity provider did put a meter on
line, voltage drops 
to 97 volts AC during peak times was not unusual. And spikes up to 130 as
well.

The transfomrer out on the pole (an oil-filled device BTW) was found to
be faulty.
It still took the electric company three months to replace the
transformer. In so doing they also
replaced the lead wires to my residence, for they too after fifty years
required replacement.

That was two years ago. So maybe past problems could be traced to the
transformer problem.
Oh and as an aside, there are still voltage peaks and drops although not
as severed as there oncewas.

Like most places, suspect the post second world war electrical
infrastructure in many places requires replacement;
and the monies and time for same are just not there...
