The first syste to die was my Power Center (Something about bad glue on the Logic board, was promptly replaced with a newer and faster machine with a bigger hard drive and more memory machine from Power Computing, the second was my wifes Grape iMac 400 (Flyback transformer died just last week), and the G3 iBook 800 logic board, three days to and from Apple, (They didn't even trash the contents the HD). I still have the working Plus, IICi, 840AV, Powermac 6500, PowerCenter 132, just sold the Beige G3 tower (my favorite) and the B&W G3.
I use an iBook 800 with OS 9.2.2 and OS X. I used OS 9 and did not look forward to using OSX it was weird and uncomfortable. Little by little I began working in OSX and as I got used to it, I use OS9 less and less. OS 9 now feels awkward. (Some clients still use OS9, and now it takes some getting used to.)
As for the iBook not being designed for long hours or hard work, BALONEY. I use the iBook for days on end doing graphic work, Loaded up with fonts, pushing pixels, running filters in Photoshop, creating illustrations in Illustrator, writing proposals in Word, creating presentations in Powerpoint, Laying out Catalogs or ads in QuarkXpress or InDesign. Doing a little work in Painter and 3D Studio and Poser. Many times with 5,6 or seven applications open at once when I am cranking, including listening to iTunes and transfering files via network via ethernet or the internet wirelessly, or burning CD's. This little puppy goes on and on, for hours, usually outlasting me in a day.
Install OS 9.2.2, use Quark 3 and whatever other programs that you want or need. Also load OSX and use it when you can do so leisurely, not under deadline, play around, have fun with the "new" programs. after awhile OSX will become more comfortable for you. And maybe you will want to go X permanantly, and maybe not. Do what works for you.
