I put a larger drive in my 350 Mhz iMac G3 and put the original 6 gb drive in an external case. It will boot, slowly, from the external drive into os 9.2.2. So it is possible. The external drive enclosure is usb 2, even though the mac only has usb 1.1 (plan ahead!). Don't know if that makes the difference.
