The same thing used to happen to me. It used to only happen when the Mac got really hot (which was multiple times a day during the summer in my old house, since I had no AC so the indoors temp was regularly 90+). Later, it started happening even when it wasn't all that hot. Finally later, the mouse died, I replaced it, and I've never had the problem happen again. So it seems, the cause was likely a faulty mouse that probably used to short out when it got hot and later just short out for no particular reason.
