Very slow launch of Mail is one of the major gripes I've heard.
Sometimes in excess of 75 seconds.

You seem to "hear" a lot of grousing without actually seeing any of these examples for yourself. Interesting.

I do have a slow launch of mail and sometimes when it seems to be checking for mail from the server (the small greyish circular image appears), it's basically locked up so that I can't read what's already in my mailbox. This is in Jag.

There are definitely some types of formatted email that still make Mail behave erratically and there were some particular problems handling certain types of messages a few iterations ago. In the case of the latter, the fix involved deleting the "LSMMap2" file (~/Library/Mail/LSMMap2), but the problem was corrected by a subsequent update. What version of Mail are you using?
