Do a google search for "Rev E ATX". There is a web site with directions 
for building a cable that connects to the internet 20 pin DIP connector 
that routes to the CRT.

I started the build at one point, but got interupted, and never finished 
it. So I can't say how well it works. (this is the hack you are thinking 
of, because the easiest way to get a 20 pin DIP connector is to use an 
old Mac Floppy Drive cable).
