I have used Macs since the LISA but have not been able to go to OS X because I've been using a PowerPC G-3 233 (Beige) Desktop w/160MB ram running OS 9.2.2.
I now have acquired a iMac 600 slot loader, with 256 MB ram, 40 Ghz HD, w/ OS 9.2.2 and am going to have to initialize the system on the computer because it was a university computer and software on it now has locked all control panels.
That's a "40 Gb HD", BTW
I have OS X 10.1 software and installation instructions say partition the OS X system in lowest 8 Ghz or less partition. Should I install OS 9.2 first setting aside a partition for OS X 10.1 or what should I do? I most likely will go to Panther if I have no problems with 10.1.
The 8 Gb partition is only required with certain machines which does not include this model. At least for OS X.2 and above, I've not heard of it being required for earlier versions of OS X.
I would recommend getting OS X.2 or X.3 (depending on how much you care to spend) and skipping 10.1. You should have no problem with 10.3.
No need to have partitions for X and 9. You can install 9.2.2 first or X first, it doesn't matter.
