Enter suitable search criteria and you'll find a report from a 350MHz iMac owner who has installed a Matshita DVD-ROM SR-8185 4X/24X which "works like a charm" and is bootable.
I have a feeling this is the same drive which originally shipped with the DVD equipped 400MHz iMacs.
