I realize that you said you were installing an upgrade to OS9, but it
sounds like you are trying to boot from OSX without installing the
firmware upgrade. I have had that happen and it can be fixed but it is
a real pain without your monitor.
Is there any chance that OSX is on that Mac?

9.2.2, the screen went black, never to light up again. Turned out that
it was a flaky power supply.
