1. MAKE A FULL, BOOTABLE (CLONE) BACKUP OF YOUR PRESENT SYSTEM -- but of course, you're doing that anyway, right? 2. When that's done, disconnect all extraneous USB or FW devices other than the keyboard and mouse.
3. Open Disk Utility and repair permissions on your drive.
4. Install Panther. You will be given "Options" of installs. You want to simply "Update" the existing OS X, or you may also wish to do an "Archive and Install" which puts a completely new System in place (saving the old one), but preserves your User stuff just as it is. I just did this for someone yesterday (a straight Update) and it worked perfectly.
5. When it's done, repair permissions again.
6. Just for good luck, reboot the machine and enjoy Panther.
You won't following the steps outlined above. The only way to lose Classic is to erase the disk. By the way, the first time you run Classic in Panther, it will ask you for permission to "update" some files for compatibility reasons. You WANT to do this, it does not CHANGE anything.And when doing so don't want to lose the accessibility of Classic.
