Just out of curiosity, is there a hardware reason for this, or is it forced obsolescence through a lack of drivers on the OS 9 disk, code in the firmware, or something else?
Hardware reasons. OS 9 cannot support USB 2 nor Firewire 800 nor (I think, could be wrong about this one) Gigabit Ethernet, nor certain kinds of new RAM used in the new machines, etc.
Some would call this "forced obsolescence," but when you look at the list of EVERYTHING that would have to be updated, you start to realise that Apple would have to spend a LOT of money on a dead product that fewer and fewer people are running. Makes no sense really.
