Best way I've found so far is to use a piece of scotch tape across the rollers to remove the gunk.
I use the TurboMouse, they have ball bearings that are a cinch to clean.
Every so often you need to disassemble mice and trackballs that use mechanical sensors and clean out the lint and dirt that accumulates.
I have an optical trackball that is a snap to clean. You pull out the ball and wipe off the gunk on the three bearing points.
