'The "SE" in "Macintosh SE" is not short for "Special Edition". It is short for "System Expandable" as mentioned in the manual for the Mac SE.'


The SE was the first Compact Mac that had an expansion slot.

Note that it got called "Somewhat Enhanced" by some who felt it didn't go far enough.
