You think these companies are really even giving away the free item?!? Nah, they take the name, and you never get anything back but headaches.
At least one of the "free iPod" companies does indeed give them out as promised -- I've met and spoken with people who were rewarded. But again, the cost -- at least for me and others who respect ourselves and our friends -- is too high IMHO.
I would sooner ask my friends to "pass the hat" and buy me one for my birthday than I would sell their names to spammers. Heck, I'd donate plasma or rob a liquor store before I'd sell my friends' names to spammers, but maybe that's just me.
