I'm walking in on this conversation without a lot of context here, so forgive me if my suggestion is impossible/stupid.
Assuming (as it sounds) that you have a major repair ahead of you, I think you should check around and see if anybody (or you yourself) have a VGA-compatible display handy. If so, your next step should be to order a Mac mini (the bare-bones config ought to be sufficient for your uses, though 512MB of RAM is better than 256MB). Use the kb and mouse from the iMac and the old display and voila! New computer.
(you can pick up a cheap Firewire case to enclose your iMac's old HD so you'll have EVERYTHING from your old machine too!)
The above plan would cost you about $600 (Mac mini, shipping/tax, FW external case). Any repair (such as the flyback transformer etc) is likely to cost you at least half that -- could be a case of diminishing returns.
Sorry I don't have a "magic bullet" for you, but hopefully that's an option you can consider.
