OK -- can someone recommend a proper hub/switch to connect my 2 iMacs to
the 
2Wire modem? This does make sense.

Just log in to your D-Link router turn off the DHCP server and plug the
2wire into one of the LAN ports.  Instant switch.  If that solves your
problem just return the router and get an switch any one will do.
Personally I prefer Linksys or Netgear.  If you can't return the D-Link
or if the switch isn't any cheaper don't bother buying one, the router
will continue to work as a switch just fine.

If that doesn't solve your problems then that modem might just be having
problems.  You can pick up one cheap on eBay.
