What sort of min spec iMac do you guys reckon is suitable for OSX?
After years of running OS X on different machines, I'd say the following is the minimum:
1. 300MHz G3 2. 256MB RAM 3. 4MB video card 4. 10GB hard drive (preferably a fast one - 5400 RPM) 5. 10.3.6 (previous versions run slower)
Yes, you can run OS X just fine for basic use on a machine that meets the above. I've run it on machines that have less than this (an original iMac for example) and machines that aren't even supported (a Wallstreet Powerbook for example).
I wouldn't do anything advanced with that sort of spec, it would be too frustrating, but for basic email/surf/one program at a time type stuff, it should be fine.
For more all-around use that includes things like iLife, I'd suggest basically the following specs (not as a minimum, but as an optimum performance v. budget guideline):
1. A G4 (this REALLY makes a difference, particularly when working with audio/video!)
2. 512MB of RAM or better (again, BIG difference)
3. A large 7200 RPM drive
4. An even larger FW external drive for backup and add'l storage (USB 2 acceptable also)
5. A 32MB video card or better
6. 10.3.x or better
The above is a sweet setup for everything but the most pro-level stuff.
