some useful factoids: -------------------------------------- * This limit affects _only_ Macs without built-in FireWire.
* This limit applies _only_ when using a drive attached to a built-in onboard ATA (IDE) bus.
* There are no partition size limit for drives on other busses, such as on a SCSI bus or a PCI-ATA adapter.
* This limit _only_ affects booting into Mac OS X, there are no partition limits when booting into a classic Mac OS (ie: 9 and earlier.)
* When booting into Mac OS X using a drive on an onboard ATA bus on affected Macs, X must be installed on the first partition which must be smaller than 8GB in size.
-------------------------------------- To sum up:
When booting into Mac OS X using a drive attached to a built-in ATA bus on a pre-FireWire Mac, OS X must be installed on the drive's less-than 8GB first partition.
AFAIK it doesn't have to be the first partition, but it must be a partition wholly within the first 8Gb of the HD. Thus you could have two 3Gb partitions at the beginning of the disk and load it on the second. Why you'd want to do this is another matter.
OS 8/9 tip -> if you want to use the same hard drive for both 8/9 and X, put X on the first partition and 8 or 9 on one of the other partitions.
