My solution was this:
1. Take the hard drive out & put it into another machine that has the firmware update for OSX.
2. Reformat the drive & install OS9 on it. Copy the firmware file to that hard drive.
3. Put the hard drive back into the problem machine.
4. Go to a thrift store and buy a cheap external monitor.
5. Boot the problem machine & view everything from the external monitor.
6. Install the firmware & the monitor on the machine should pop on.
Good luck

I believe I have ended up with the extended problem with the iMac DV firmware problem, where the iMac switches off after a short while, not just screwey video picture.
I have this solution, but thought I'd ask if anyone here has performed this, and have any feedback.
