::chuckles:: Some other people have mentioned 4 gigs
is a bit small to put X on there but it *will* work.
I've done it.

 A couple of suggestions though.

#1: Check that your firmware is updated.
A list of what firmware updates are needed is here.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58174

Instructions on how to update firmware here.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60385

#2: Reformat the disk: HFS+ of course

#3: Install 10.3 first since you will need every
available bit of space to let it optimize itself.

#4: Run Delocalizer to free up 700-900 Megs of space.

It can be found here.

http://www.bombich.com/software/local.html

It says it hasn't been tested on 10.3 but it works
fine.

#5: Repair Permissions. There are several programs
for this. I prefer Cocktail.

It can be found here.

http://www.macosxcocktail.com/

#6: Run Software Update to get your computer to
10.3.8 and all the other crud that may need updating
depending on how old your installation disk is.
Hopefully you have broad band or can take the iMac
somewhere that does.

#7: Repair Permissions again.

#8: Install OS 9 then update it to 9.2.1 or 9.2.1.
9.1 is the minimum that will function as Classic. If
your drive was bigger than 8 gigs you would have had
to have partitioned it to have OSX in the first approx
7.9 Gigs of space but with only 4 gigs you didn't need
to worry about that if you at some time replace the
hard drive remember that though.

A couple of things that all this depends on.....

....you have at least 128 Megs of RAM in the iMac
already. I've ran 10.3 with 160 but there was a
noticable increase going to 256 Megs of RAM.

Then your daughter will have access to the web using
modern browsers ie: Safari 1.2.3 and Firefox and be
able to use iTunes and iChat. For my wife and kids
that is the main thing that they use the computer for
anyways and your Bondi will do fine for those purposes
as is.

If you try adding RAM one thing that happens to a lot
of Bondis is they don't recognize anything larger than
32 in the bottom or won't recognize any 256 Meg chips
at all. My original Rev B daughterboard would only
recognize 32 in the bottom and with several different
256 chips only recognized 128 of the RAM in the top.
This is completely random with no rhyme or reason.

One good thing is people who buy those Sonnet upgrades
now have an extra daughterboard laying around that
sometimes you can pick up cheap. I replaced my 233
with a 333 and put two 128's in it and it does fine
for my wife and kids running Panther.

Many people do have 512 working in Bondis but I'd
been burned buy the two 256's I'd already bought that
wouldn't work in mine and didn't want to spend anymore
on my wife's computer so I just went with 128s.

Well I've rambled enough hopefully some of it was
helpful.
