The big difference is that if the kids destroy your computer, they might
only be killing you, not innocent pedestrians.

Don't forget the value of your lost time and work, as well.

I have given my children years-old Macs with virtually no resale value, and
they are learning to use them without the fear of my losing my work or my
work machine. So far, they stay away from my work machine unless I am also
there. Seems to be a good solution.

I expect that when they are old enough, the children have learned to be
careful and they will appreciate the graduated responsibilities they have
been given.
