AFAIK there are some memory chips problems. I was upgrading my ruby imac and it was kinda difficult to find a good memory chip, the best way to check if they will work with yours is to put it in and see if this will work, if the machine starts and you will see that you have more memory you should also wait and see how's your OSX will work. I had problems with one chip, which had to be replaced, system was starting just fine, but after some period of time it was freezing or making other nasty things, like making the whole works slow and such. Replacing that chip helped.
Based on my expereince I would reccomend you getting ram chips and trying them, they are cheap but you really have to check if your computer "likes" that chip :)
