WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT PUT ANYMORE THAN 128 MEGS OF RAM IN IT. I
tried it on my sisters' iMac (same as your's). IF you look up the
apple specs, it will say that it cannot support more than 128. putting
256+ in will allow the installer to run smoother, but nothing else, it
WILL cause X to crash. As to why it won't install, I have no clue.

Greetings all.
By way of introduction, I have been an avid Mac fan since the Color
Macintosh, and am currently running a G4 with OS X 10.3. While I do
not claim to be a Mac expert by far, I've done technical support for
Macs before and have a Computer Science degree. Still, bear with me if
I don't know everything I need up-front.
Here's my dilemma: As a holiday present, an old friend of mine gave my
stepson an iMac G3 tray-loading model. As far as I can tell it is a
Rev. C model clocked at 333 MHz. It is currently running Mac OS 9.2.2.
I've upgraded the RAM to 128 Mb--and will upgrade further once I can
afford better RAM. I've also confirmed that the firmware currently
installed is version 1.4.2, which I believe is the highest firmware
available for this model.
But while the hard drive is HFS+ formatted, the machine simply will
not read any CD-ROMs in HFS+ format--including my OS X installation
disks. The iMac will attempt to read them, but after about 15 seconds
will as if I wish to format the disk in ProDOS format. I've been
racking my brain and searching through forums and sites such as
lowendmac.com and xlr8yourmac.com but have yet to find so much as a
lead that could help shed light on the problem.
Does anyone here have any ideas as to what I can do? My stepson can
stay in OS 9.2.2 if necessary but obviously OS X would be an
improvement if only in the amount of available software.
I appreciate any and all advice you can share. Thank you.
Lil
