Thanks for all your advice. I have turned off all but the system fonts and this speeds it up quite a bit, but I am a publisher so need fonts on. I use Suitcase to manage fonts and only have about 20 on at a time maximum. The other Mirror Door in the office has about 100 fonts running and doesn't experience the same problems as me.
In response to the RAM question all 4 other macs (Mirror Door G4, 2x Sawtooth G4, 1x iMac G3) all have 768MB RAM and mine has 512MB (soon to be 1GB).
