I know I need to make each machine wireless with the aid of a card or a USB
adapter, but do I need a wireless access point if it only two machines sharing an
internet connection.

No. But considering you can get one for a small amount (I've seen 802.11b boxes at Micro Center for less than $20) I'd go that route, since it is painless and quick.

Otherwise you'll need to make one of the machines (the one that's
actually connected to the net) route for the other one. Either
a Mac or a Peecee can do this. Here's a link that describes how
to do this in Windoze XP: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/ics.mspx . I suspect if it's like doing other stuff on
Windoze you'll spend a LONG time getting it working. Good luck.

With OS X, you use the Sharing control panel's Internet tab to
set things up. I haven't tried it (I don't have a configuration
that would work with it), but I bet it's easier than the
previous.

If you buy a little router, it should come with setup instructions.
If you have a G3 iMac, good luck finding an airport card--you'll
probably have to settle for a USB adapter unless you're willing
to pay a truly ridiculous amount for the originally-free extender
card.

Oh yeah, if you have one machine that's already using a wired
connection, you can plug it into the wireless router and skip
getting a wireless adapter for that system--that should make
the price about equal.

In any event, good luck.
