Apple Double will work fine, but many PC users will get two attachments, the first will have a name that starts with a % and will be unreadable. Alas, PC users, by their very nature, are too stupid to try opening the 2nd, normal named attachment and find that it works just fine. Smart may end up compressing the attachment (which the stx extension may be an indication of). If all else fails, choose Base64. That is the PC world standard and works for everything EXCEPT files with resource forks. Base64 will kill the resource fork of a Mac file. Less of an issue under OS X then under OS 9, but still something to keep in mind if you are sending a mac specific file to another mac user. (BTW: AppleDouble is standard Base64, with the resource fork encoded as its own file attachment, that is the % named attachment that PC users may see... and because it is normal Base64, PC users can open an AppleDouble attachment just fine, provided they ignore the % named file).
