I have 2 iMacs here that are giving me fits with kernel panics. One is a G3/400 graphite and the other a G3/500 snow.
Both have had the drives wiped, firmware updates done, fresh installs of OS 9.2.2 and 10.3.8 with all the updates. I can Safe Boot them and everything is dandy. But, regular boot produces a panic...not everytime but fairly frequent.
So, Safe Boot only loads Apple kernel extensions, and that is trouble-free. Regular boot causes panic - points to third party extensions - yes? Got any apps that have installed kexts? Norton? Aladdin/Allume?
hmmm...yes and no. the 400 doesn't have any extra apps other than standard Apple apps. The 500 has several graphic and audio apps. No Norton though...I know better than to install anything Norton.
After the panic, I can Safe Boot then go into var/db/ folder and trash the Bootcache.playlist then reboot and everything is fine...
And you are deleting that particular file because...?
...because that's what the Apple knowledge base suggested.
but sure enough, another boot or so later and it crashes. The Snow 500 has crashed while just running the screen saver.
So, "crash" meaning what? Kernel panic? Or something else? Have you looked at your logs?
It gives the "You need to restart your computer" black box in the middle of the screen....
I haven't looked at the logs....dunno where to look.
