Had a similar problem a year ago with a Lite-On FireWire CD burner.
In my case, the problem was solved when I moved the jumper from Cable Select to Master. From then on the drive was recognised in Toast.
Worth a shot perhaps?

Mmmmmmh, maybe, it has two VERY small "ON-OFF" switches on the bottom, the left one marked "OFF (Do not turn on)".
Maybe if I experiment with that. I'll report about it later.
