My G4 iMac has started doing this. When I wake it from sleep, the
desktop flashes on briefly and then the screen goes dark. Moving the
mouse flashes the Computer Name screen saver and then the desktop
appears. In the Deskto & Screen Saver Control Panel I have the Start
Screen Saver set to Never. Any idea as to what to check? Repairing
permissions and running the cron scripts don't seem to help.

Check to see if your screensaver has any "hot corners" activated. If so, turn em off.

Ok, Chas, here is what I saw when I clicked the Hot Corners button in the Screen Saver Pane of the Desktop & Screen Saver Control Panel

Each corner has a drop down menu listing the following:

Start Screen Saver
Disable Screen Saver

Expose (this line is grayed out)
   All Windows
   Application Windows
   Desktop

-

All four corners have the - option checked. What does this do?

I have never used the Screen Saver, nor configured the Hot Corners
