It has been a long time but I thought somebody might like a follow-up. I found a monster hard drive at the local superstore for near half-price after rebate. I finally got up the courage to download Mac the Ripper and - Wowee - we are happily burning DVD's to our hard drive! The program downloaded with no hitches and even our first burning effort was 100% pain-free and successful. Copying the source DVD is literally a one button operation: launch Mac the Ripper and press the green "Go" button. That's it. We have copied a half-dozen DVD's over a four-week period so I think it is safe to say that Mac the Ripper is highly recommended.
Many thanks, was it Badger(?), for the recommendation.
